Karl and Mary Smith

South Africa / Regional Evangelist

The Karl Smith family began their involvement in Foreign Missions as AIM missionaries in 1995.  They were stationed in the Northwest province of South Africa.  The Smiths received appointment as UPCI Missionaries to South Africa in 1998 at the Greensboro, N.C. conference.

Currently the Smiths make their home in Cape Town and are involved in church planting, literature development, evangelism and training programs for the national Church. They have also traveled to several other countries in southern Africa to evangelize. 

Mary Smith holds a Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies and enjoys doing volunteer work, writing and educating her children.  In addition she has traveled in South Africa speaking to ladies groups and has worked with the Sunday School program of the UPC of South Africa to encourage children’s evangelism programs.  In 2003, the Smiths’ appointment was expanded to include regional evangelism.  Bro. Smith also serves as chairman of the South Africa Missionary Fellowship and works closely with the missionaries on location there as well as with the leadership of the national church.

The Smith's have three sons.  Joshua is 22 and is moving to Bangor, Maine in fall 2007, to continue studying for a degree in Psychology.  He will be marrying his fiancée, Morgan, in January 2008.  Ryan is 19 and will continue with his sophomore class this fall at Christian Life College in Stockton, CA.  Gavin is a spirited 9 year old who loves his adopted country.  In Gavin's own words, "I am a South African American!"
