James and Linda Poitras
The Poitrases, both educators, met in Nigeria, married, and received their missionary appointment in 1985. They reside in Ghana where Jim Poitras serves as missionary coordinator, president of the Bible school, and director of Christian education. Linda Poitras is the chairperson for Reaching Africa’s Children, directs the children’s ministries in Ghana, and teaches at ACTS-Ghana. Their daughters, Melinda and Candra, are both actively involved in the work. In Africa, he is the coordinator of Vision for Africa Ministries, which comprises the seven specialized regional ministries; chairman of Africa Aflame Publications; and area coordinator of English speaking West Africa. Internationally, Poitras serves as the coordinator of the Global Association of Theological Studies. Under the director of Education/AIM, the Poitrases work extensively with strengthening our global Bible school efforts, writing curriculum, designing a distance education program and creating/teaching in faculty development courses.
The Poitras girls came to Africa when they were seven weeks old and have spent all their lives in West Africa. Melinda turned eighteen in March 2007. She plans to spend an additional year in Ghana working as a teacher’s aid at the American International School. Candra continues her schooling with the ABeka program.
Melinda completed thirteen years of home schooling, graduated from Pensacola Christian Academy, and is currently serving as an elementary teacher's assistant at the American International School in Accra for one year. This will assist her in exploring future career goals. Melinda is an avid writer and her poetry and articles have blessed many. Melinda graduated recently and is working at the Accra International School as an elementary teachers' assistant. She plans to go to Indiana Bible College in Indianapolis next year.
Candra is working on completing her final two years of high school through home schooling. She continues to help fill the Poitras home with laughter and enjoys playing the violin and designing her own clothes.
Both girls are active in altar work, in Sunday school, helping with overseas visitors, and helping Dad with secretarial duties as their social agenda permits. Both love Africa, Africa is their home.
